Welcome Everyone,

Thanks for coming to our website dedicated to Andrew Best. This is the focal point for our new annual charitable event.

As many of you will know Andrew sadly passed away on December 11th 2008, aged just 36. Andrew died from malignant melanoma, leaving behind his wife Nicola and their two lovely girls Emily (4) and Rachel (2). Andrew, Andy or Besty, however you knew him, was much loved by all who were lucky enough to have met him. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him, a truly genuine guy.

Andrew’s passing has been very difficult to cope with for his friends and family, but with this event we are endeavouring to channel our energy into something as positive as it possibly can be and to help the lives of anyone directly affected by cancer. With this in mind a group of us have put our heads together and come up with this website and the idea that we will run an annual charitable event in his name, under the catchy title, The Best Way!

So to kick us off for 2009, Andrew’s friend Ratty came up with the idea of combining Andrew’s love of cycling with a journey from his adopted city Edinburgh, where he lived with his wife and children, back to Portadown in Northern Ireland the town where he grew up.

The event will take place over 3 days from Friday 12th June to Sunday 14th June 2009 and has been split into 3 stages;

  • Stage 1 – Edinburgh to Glasgow – 54 miles
  • Stage 2 – Glasgow to Troon – 32 miles
  • Stage 3 – Larne to Portadown – 44 miles

If you are up for the challenge, whether it is just one or two stages or the whole thing, then click here to complete our registration form and pay the relevant registration fee. During registration, you will be asked to select Marie Curie or Cancer Research UK. Your name will be added to the relevant Just Giving page, where we would ask that you direct your sponsors to, by coming to www.thebestway.org.uk/sponsortheride.html.

If you can’t do the cycle but you are willing to volunteer your help for one of the stages please click here. This could include handing out refreshments, helping at the lunch stops, mending tyres or even driving a support vehicle!

If you can not do either and you wish to support us, please click on the Donate link for either Marie Curie or Cancer Research above, or both.

The event will culminate in a celebratory BBQ at Portadown Rugby Club on Sunday 14th June. We will all be able to congratulate ourselves, hopefully(!), and take time to remember those who we know or knew affected by cancer, in the knowledge we have done something tangible to help ease the devastating impact of the disease. Tickets to this will be complimentary for all riders and volunteers, other people are welcome to join us, tickets will cost £10 with all proceeds going to charity. If you would like to come to the BBQ but will not be cycling click here.

Hope to see most of you on at least one leg of the journey, or the BBQ at the very least!!
